Done for now
Hard to believe it's been this long since I last posted, but c'est la vie! I'm well and reasonably happy right now, but I've done little to no work on my book/project/goal-type thing. And since the end time is drawing nigh--for this round of ROW80, that is--I've decided to quit while the quittin's good. This end of the year business plays hell with goal keeping.
This does not mean that I've quit forever. I fully intend to make the first round of ROW80 for 2012 myNew Year's resolution new start for 2012. So, in the coming weeks I will flesh out my old goals, come up with something new and get back to it on January 2nd.

ROW80 11/16 Check-in
Well, the cold-type thing has sucker punched me, but I'm determined to get it on the ropes and finish it off before the week is through. I can't think of any more boxing metaphors, so I'll sign off for now. Wish me luck and I'll send some your way, too. See you all on Sunday!

ROW80 11/13 check-in
Ah, yes, a day late and a dollar short. Well, since I last posted not a lot has gone on and this is mainly due to my battling the beginnings of a cold or sinus infection or somedamnthing. But. Just because one hasn't written doesn't mean one has not been working on writing.
I'm now calling my novel a book because at this point I'm shaping it into either a novel-in-stories or a collection of linked stories or a big damn mess, take your pick. My idea is to work up a group of stories all revolving around the same location with a number of recurring characters and try to sell the stories individually. Then if there's enough interest I can maybe sell the whole thing as one of the above, though hopefully not "a big damn mess."
My first love has always been the short story, but I've also had this nagging idea to write a book about--no groans, please--where I work, (I've spent 16 years with this organization, so why the hell not). And since this whole writing thing is a process this is where I am right now. I'm using as my models many novels-in-stories, namely Winesburg, Ohio by Anderson, The Martian Chronicles by Bradbury--he said that Winesburg was his model for Martian--334 by Disch and Catacomb Years by Bishop among others--and I've looked up lots and lots of others to get an idea about how best to put things together.
Stylistically, I'm using two of my favorites, Kurt Vonnegut--namely Breakfast of Champions--and Douglas Adams' whole Hitchhiker "trilogy" as models of...ahem, well, style. Yep, I'm going absurd. Join me!
I did do some actual writing today, though it was mostly note-taking, so it was not part of my goal and thus, no Oreos, alas.
By the bye, thanks to everyone who's commented on my previous posts. It's nice to know I'm not alone--as so many of us poor scribblers seem to feel--and I promise to make comments right back atcha!

All right! I've started writing and got 676 words down last night, (that's over my page-a-day goal limit, so far)! Yay!! Oreos for me!

Well, it's just been a few days, but...
I'm still working on my synopsis for the book and I've set a space in the house to write in, not exactly writing progress per se, but now I've a dedicated area to actually write in which is something.

A Round of Words in 80 days, more or less
Howdy,
My name is House Holder--at least, that's what I go by for these purposes. I'm a gonna-be writer.
I'm also a short timer. Mainly because I just found out about this site (thanks to this guy) and decided to do this instead of NaNoWriMo. I tried NaNoWriMo back in '04 and found it wanting. I don't write that way, don't care for the pressure. So, I decided to give this a try. I like the philosophy of ROW80 and want to use it jump start my writing after a few months in a state of stall.
So, what are my goals for ROW80? Well, I'm starting a novel, so I guess planning my novel is the foremost thing I'll work on to start. (Which, in truth, is what I've been working on before now. I'm just not finished.) I'm going to make a synopsis instead of an outline this go round. I co-wrote a novel earlier this year and we used an outline which was a tremendous help for the type of novel we were doing, but since my novel doesn't fit one genre in particular, (It's satirical SF with a dash of realism thrown in for flavoring, or not. Since I've just started, I've no idea where it's going to go), I thought I'd try the synopsis-style outline.
After that, I'd like to focus on production. Knowing me and my schedule and general disposition, my goal to start is a page a day. If I do more, great. If I do less, well, no Oreos for me.
